About Us

Our mission is to provide physical and spiritual food to vulnerable children. We believe their greatest need is a relationship with Jesus Christ, but their greatest threat is starvation. Our initiatives address both.

Be the Need operates in the community of Soweto, a slum of about 7,000 people located just outside of Nairobi, Kenya. We use food to meet an immediate need, but our Vision is to see long term, sustainable change in the community. One of the biggest challenges we face, is lack of hope. When people believe their circumstances won’t change, they lose hope. Providing a meal doesn’t change their situation. It may encourage them, but they still wake up hungry the next day, feeling hopeless, and dependent on the next free meal. Change occurs, and hope is built, when we form relationship and journey with them, teaching, training and equipping them, and as they begin making different choices, and start see different results, they begin hoping again, and that is key to creating sustainable change.
