Our Story
We are Slade and Katie Hunt, and along with our children, founded Be the Need in 2021. In 2020, we felt God was calling us away from our corporate careers to a new unknown, uncharted, unfinanced, life of full-time ministry. Upon leaving our jobs, selling our house and belongings, we left for Nairobi, Kenya in June of 2021, to start our ministry journey. Not really knowing the full scope of our journey, we were connected with Mwamko Children’s Center located in the slum of Soweto, and this is where our ministry really began. Being surrounded by so many needs, the thought of even trying to meet a portion of them quickly became overwhelming and left us feeling helpless. We knew we couldn’t meet them all, but we knew we had to do something. Our motto became “if you can’t do it all, do what you can”. It was through these feelings and experiences that God began to show us areas where we could best help. So, through much prayer, counsel, trial and error, experience and redirection, our mission is clear. We want to reach as many vulnerable children as we can, and our community feeding program is the best way for us to do that. We hope that you will partner with us as we do our part to fight child hunger and spread the saving message of Jesus Christ.
